Could ‘BRAVE’s Merida be Gay? Clues in the movie say…

Pixar has just released it’s new movie BRAVE about a young heroine Merinda who defies boys, girlie clothes and being wimpy. Basically, Merida kicks ass. And wouldn’t it make her even cooler if it turned out she was….a lesbian!

Entertainment Weekly has put up a thought provoking article comparing the month of Pride to the release of the film BRAVE and their anti-princess Princess Merida. According to the article and the movie, Merida rebukes traditional female roles and stereotypes, shows no interest in boys and hates the idea of marriage so much that she runs away because of it! Surely many of us lesbians and gay men have felt just like this at times. I actually got a little emotional thinking about the parallels in that way. Interesting theory, no?

She loves archery and rock climbing and hangs out with witches at some points! Screw that ‘Cinderella-singing-to-the-birds-begging-for-your-man-dress-making-crap’! Ill tell you this – I am not a fan of ‘children’s’ movies, animated movies, whatever but I actually want to see this! (That should be a pleasant shock for my homie ‘R’ who sent me the info on Merida!) I’ll check it out this weekend and report back to you on more ways we can welcome Merida as a gay icon – who cares if she is gay or straight – she is a kick-ass chick!
