…so I really hope all those LGBTQ haters & ‘christians’ get off line!

Keywords: google gay, google supports lgbtq rights, google targets anti-gay countries

Go Google! Just yesterday, July 9th, Google announced its campaign to rally for world-wide support of same-sex marriage and rights. The campaign, called ‘Legalise Love’ was kicked off in London at an LGBTQ conference. (PS – did you know that there is a WORLD PRIDE celebration and it’s in London?! So cool!)

Google’s website states that ‘Legalise Love is our call to decriminalise homosexuality and eliminate homophobia around the world.’ They say some other great stuff too, like…

“at Google, we encourage people to bring their whole selves to work. In all of our 60 offices around the world, we are committed to cultivating a work environment where Googlers can be themselves and thrive. We also want our employees to have the same inclusive experience outside of the office, as they do at work, and for LGBT communities to be safe and to be accepted wherever they are.”

Great! Google is first targeting countries like Singapore and Poland are first, because they criminalize gay people and punish them for simply being. Gays are thrown in jail, punished, tortured and even killed.

“Singapore wants to be a global financial centre and world leader, and we can push them on the fact that being a global centre and a world leader means you have to treat all people the same, irrespective of their sexual orientation,” Google’s head of diversity Mark Palmer-Edgecumbe is reported to have said.

Josh Taylor, from Gen Why? puts it wonderfully by saying that “as a tech giant, Google has the ability to be much more influential in pushing for decriminalisation than foreign governments. Its influence is enormous through its search engine, Gmail, Android and countless other Google services. Countries that would boycott Google for advocating the decriminalisation of homosexuality would face cutting their citizens off from a lot of services that they use each and every day.”

Here’s to hoping this forces global players into rethinking their stance. Or, in the very least, hopefully nutso-conservative Christians will boycott Google like they do Oreo’s and JC Penney. (Why dont they boycott Facebook too? I’m going to have to blog about that!) Way to go Google! We heart you!
